Sultan of Sokoto announces commencement of 2023 Ramadan fasting

Sultan of Sokoto and president of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA),Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, says the crescent for the commencement of the Ramadan fasting has been sighted.

In a broadcast on Wednesday night, Abubakar said Muslims in the country should commence fasting on Thursday, March 23.

Regarded as a holy month, Ramadan is the period when Muslims observe fasting and prayers.

The sultan of Sokoto said the announcement follows reports of moonsighting received from Islamic scholars and organisations from across the country.

He said the reports were duly “authenticated and verified” by the states and national moonsighting committees.

“Consequently, tomorrow Thursday the 23rd day of  March 2023 becomes the first day of Ramadan 1444 after Hijra,” Sultan said.

“We, therefore, call on all Muslims to commence fasting accordingly. As we just concluded the 2023 general elections and leaders emerge at the national and state levels by Allah’s will, we, therefore, call on all Muslims to use this holy month to pray in guiding the affairs of our great country.

“We appeal to the well-meaning individuals amongst us to assist the vulnerable and the poor people with food during this holy month of Ramadan to ease the hardship people are going through. May Allah reward us for our ibadahwith Jannatul Firdaus, Ameen.”

Chrisland schools breaks silence over 12-year-old student’s death...As Parent cries blue murder

The management of Chrisland schools has explained the incident that led to the death of one of their students, Whitney Adeniran, who died during the school’s inter-house sports activities at Agege Stadium, Lagos State, on Thursday.

Michael Adeniran, Whitney’s father, Blessing, had taken to social media on Saturday night to demand a probe into the death of his daughter, calling on the Lagos State government and the police to intervene in the matter.

They also demanded Chrisland explain what actually happened to his daughter, adding that she had no health condition or sickness as of the time the school bus picked her up for the event.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident saying, “the matter was reported to the police immediately after the incident occurred.

“The case is presently at the State Criminal Investigation Department and an autopsy is going to be carried out to know the circumstances that led to her death. That’s all the update I have for now.”

Reacting to the call for justice for the deceased, Chrisland released a press statement on Sunday and a copy was made available to our correspondent.

The statement read, “The management and staff of Chrisland Schools Limited, with a deep sense of loss, announce the death of our precious student, Whitney Adeniran; whose painful exit occurred on Thursday, February 9th, 2023.

“We are heartbroken and distressed. Whitney was one of our Day students who opted not to participate in the inter-house sports match past for reasons we were not very sure of.

“However, on discretion, we respected her decision to err on the side of caution, because on the January 20, 2023, it is in our records that she had complained about a not-too-buoyant health and we immediately contacted her parents.

“Her father, Mr. Michael Adeniran, came to the school to take her home. We emphasised to her parents to take a critical look at her.”

The school said the deceased slumped in “public view and not under any hidden circumstances,” adding that she was rushed to the nearest medical facility for first aid.

“Our immediate response was to take advantage of proximity to first-aid, by identifying the nearest medical facility to take her to, where the doctor on duty, administered oxygen and every aid possible on her,” the statement said.

Chrisland appealed to the Adeniran family to establish a scientific verification of the underlying cause of her death before her burial.

“We immediately notified regulatory stakeholders and agencies to allow for a comprehensive evaluation and assessment of the developments.

“In spite of the compelling imperatives to fill any information gaps in public space, we stopped short of making any media sensation out of this, because the deceased in question, was a minor and is deserving of our unqualified respect.

“We also prioritised according respect to the privacy of the family and were with them consistently, to mourn together. This is a painful loss for all of us,” it added.

While mourning Whitney Adeniran, the management and staff of the Lagos-based school said they feel the deep pain of this loss and their thoughts and prayers are with the family.

“As we continue to uphold the sobriety of this moment, we resist any urge to join issues on her treasured memory, in media trends.

“As we await the outcome of an independent post-mortem process, we remain unwaveringly committed to supporting the family at this critical moment and pray fervently for the fortitude to bear her painful loss,” the statement added.

January 9 Collective Draws Attention to Mental Health at 11th Anniversary Lecture

January 9 Collective, a socio-political group of professionals has called on governments across Nigeria to pay more attention to and also increase funding for mental health.

The call was made by the association’s Captain, Loye Amsat while declaring open its 11th Anniversary lecture where he noted that the rise in mental health cases was a cause for concern.

Also lending her voice to the urgent need for intervention was the guest speaker,Oluseyi Elizabeth Odudimu, a UK-based mental health expert and CEO, Stop Mental Illness Foundation ( SMIF) who delivered a paper on the topic: “Mental Health: Non- Governmental Organisations (MHNGOs) Role in Nigeria’s Health Sector”.

According to Odudimu, state and federal governments need to examine why there is a rise in mental health cases and take steps to reduce the incidents of the stigmatisation of mental health patients.

She noted that mental illness was like physical health challenges that can be healed with proper care.

According to her, the growing problems in the mental health sector include:inadequate mental health care facilities to meet the needs of our large population, zero budget or low investment in mental health care services, unavailability of education and relevant training materials at national and sub-national levels and failure to integrate mental healthcare to primary healthcare.

She noted that Mental Health NGOs like SMIF have played a major role in stemming the tide by providing treatment services, educational programmes for public and community mental health educators, advocacy, empowerment and promotion of equal right to treatment.

She noted that despite their best efforts, MHNGOs still face challenges such as scarcity of mental health professionals, insufficient facilities and inaccessible services, financial and resources constraints, the criminalization of attempted suicide victims and policy makers giving less priority to mental healthcare issues.

She stated further that mental healthcare can be improved if governments and other stakeholders can work together for policy improvement, integration of mental health care to primary health care, political buy in and urgent bio psychosocial research to understand the cause, course and outcome of mental disorders in Nigeria.

Odudimu rounded off in an optimistic note when she affirmed that there are indications that things will get better in future with the signing of the Mental Health Bill into law.

The postponement was announced on Wednesday by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, after the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja.

The exercise, earlier scheduled for 29 March, will now take place in May but no specific date has been given.

The minister also disclosed that the council approved N2.8 billion for the National Population Commission (NPC) to procure software for the census.

We won’t compromise 2023 despite pressure....Chief of Defence Staff

Amid repeated assurances from President Muhammadu Buhari and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) towards a credible and hitch-free 2023 general elections, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Lucky Irabor, yesterday, in a startling revelation, disclosed that security agencies are under intense pressure from all corners to compromise the elections.

He, however, allayed fears of a truncated process, while calling on Nigerians to put their trust in the security forces as they remain wholly committed to remaining neutral before, during and after the exercise.

Irabor, who appeared on the Ministerial Media Briefing anchored by the Presidential Communications Team at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, revealed that security personnel, specifically, come under pressure through sundry inducements, noting, however, that measures are being put in place by the hierarchy to ensure that the men obey the directive to remain neutral, notwithstanding.

He said personnel are being trained to be more professional in their dealings while Standard Operations Practice (SOP) before, during and after the elections have been codified and distributed to them.

Answering a question on how prepared the military is to ward off pressure to compromise elections given the President’s directive for neutrality, he said: “I’m glad that you reiterated the Commander-in-Chief’s directive to the armed forces.
“I’m afraid you say you have a worry. Rather than worry, I would rather think that trust should be the anchor. Why?
“Of course, there will always be pressure from all quarters, wanting to induce security forces, not just the military. And that’s what criminal enterprise is all about.
“But what makes the difference is the professional approach to dealing with those issues. And that’s what as the military, we are committed to doing.
“So, please cease from worrying. Rather, trust and also engage others to trust that we will keep faith to these desires.”

Continuing, the Defence Chief noted that the armed forces have added fillip to their engagement across the country to tackle contemporary and emerging threats, putting in place contingent plans to facilitate the smooth conduct of the elections to support INEC in conjunction with other security agencies.

He said efforts were also in place to safeguard critical national infrastructure, assuring that the military is committed to meeting its constitutional requirement, which is to ensure a safe and secure Nigeria for citizens.

Irabor also spoke on key achievements of the military in the effort to keep the country safe, including more recruitment into all branches of the security services, routing of insurgency and banditry as well as the action to curtail oil theft.

He added that over 300,000 people have been freed from the hands of abductors since 2014, while refugees, who fled the Northeast due to insurgency, have started to return.

The CDS informed that former insurgents now being trained would graduate in February next year before their eventual reintegration into the society.
Despite the defence chief’s assurances, the major opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has urged the military to operate strictly within the confines of its rules and regulations to avoid being compromised by politicians.
The party, which spoke through its Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) in reaction to an open disclosure by the CDS, urged the military hierarchy to ensure that the rank and file operate within the confines of the rules of carrying out the responsibility of internal security.

Spokesperson of the Atiku-Okowa Presidential Campaign Organisation, Kola Ologbondiyan, in an interview with journalists in Abuja, said: “What is important is for the military to guarantee a credible military for our nation. They have the duty of protecting the territorial integrity of our nation and a duty of ensuring conformity with the laws.”

Ologbondiyan charged politicians who are putting pressure on the military to go and engage the people who will vote.
He said: “They should go and sell their promises if they will be bought by the people. They should stop mounting pressure on the military, they should face the electorate.
“If you look at the political climate of our nation today, you will agree with me that the presidential candidate of our party, Atiku Abubakar, who is campaigning and also talking to Nigerians, is marketing policies, promises that he plans for his government when he is sworn in as president on May 29. As such, we counsel other politicians to stop mounting pressure on the military,” Ologbondiyan added.

However, stakeholders within the technology and academic spaces have called for a synergy among INEC, Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC), Galaxy Backbone, NigComSat and other private Internet broadband providers in the country to boost the general elections.
This advice formed part of the communiqué issued at the just concluded three-day national workshop election infrastructure organised by the Centre for Cyberspace Studies, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, held in Abuja.
In the communiqué signed by the Chairman of the forum, Chris Uwaje, and Associate Professor and Executive Director, Centre for Cyberspace, NSUK, Uche M. Mbanaso, yesterday, stakeholders stressed that the partnership would ensure improved broadband connectivity and protect robust seamless network infrastructure across the country, especially in remote areas.

The workshop which has the theme: Enriching the Values of Free, Fair, Inclusive, Credible and Transparent Elections was declared open by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Pantami.
In his speech, the Minister, who was the special guest of honour, commended the organisers for providing a strategic platform that will enhance stakeholder engagement to ensure that the digital provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 deliver the expected credible, free, fair, inclusive and transparent election in 2023.

The central objective of the workshop was to avail stakeholders in the Nigerian electoral process an opportunity to brainstorm on the concerns, challenges, and desirable interventions needed to enhance effective preparations and delivery of successful 2023 National elections.
As such, it was pointed out that the NCC and NITDA should facilitate full implementation of IPv6 and ensure timely synchronisation with IPv4 to enhance interoperability of digital infrastructure elements.

In terms of security, the stakeholders said the Office of National Security Adviser (ONSA) currently in charge of cyber-security should designate some tertiary institutions as Centres of Excellence (CoE) in cyber-security to advance capacity building, research and development (R&D) as coordinated and measurable standards to improve national cyber-security posture. This buttresses the urgent need for a pipeline of cyber-security workforce that is very knowledgeable and skilled to enhance the protection of national cyberspace.

In his welcome address, the convener and Vice-Chancellor of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Prof. Suleiman Bala Mohammed, thanked President Buhari for the boldness to reform the nation’s electoral process to include the use of digital resources like BVAS and IReV for the first time.
Also, the West African Elders’ Forum (WAEF) has said the successful conduct of the election in Nigeria will set a good example for other countries.

Ernest Bai Koroma, head of the WAEF pre-election mediation mission, said this at a news conference while presenting the forum’s post-mission statement in Abuja, yesterday.

Koroma said the 2023 election is of great significance for West Africa and the entire African continent. He said the successful conduct of the election will show the rest of the region that democracy has come to stay.
“We call on all Nigerians to exercise their right to civic participation both before and during the coming elections without fear while also respecting the rights of others to do the same,” he said.
“Our region, West Africa, of late, has experienced some reversal in democratic practice with unconstitutional changes of government in some countries. At the heart of the instability within the sub-region are the issue of disputed elections and citizen disaffection.

“The 2023 general elections in Nigeria is crucial not just for Nigeria alone but for West Africa and the African continent. They are the first of three to be held in the region next year. The successful conduct of peaceful, credible, inclusive, free and fair elections here will set a good example for others.
“This will not only send a message that democracy is here to stay in West Africa, but will also resuscitate hope at a time when the sub-region is plagued with various challenges.”

Koroma said although some stakeholders have reservations, relevant authorities have assured that all concerns will be addressed ahead of the election.
“We are optimistic that a secure and free environment and a level playing field will be guaranteed for all citizens and political actors, irrespective of political affiliations,” he said.

Old Naira Notes no more Legal Tender In Nigeria — CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has declared that the old Naira Notes of N200, N500 and N1000 have ceased to be legal tender in Nigeria since the 10th of February, 2023.

The declaration was made by the Branch Controller of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Bauchi, Haladu Idris Andaza while briefing Journalists on Monday at the CBN, branch in Bauchi.

He said that “In the last 24 hours, we have been inundated by questions from various angles of the general public about our operational guidelines on the old currency notes, be that as it may, there are so many questions here and there which people have been asking about.”

According to him, “So for the avoidance of doubt, we wish to state categorically that CBN is ready and is opened to receive all of those old notes based on certain conditions and criteria.”

“Customers are free to come to the Bank and deposit which they cannot do at the Commercial Banks anymore because the currency has seized to be a legal tender since the 10th of this month.

Consequently, the management of the CBN decided that those customers will have a sigh of relief by coming to the offices of the CBN in all the 36 states in the Federation including FCT to deposit their money.

The customer has to go to the CBN portal and fill a form in the portal, there will be a form there concerning this currency redesign and exchange.”

Andaza further explained that “After filling the form, you generate a code, you either print it or come with it in your mobile phone, give us the code and the information contained therein. In the form, you are expected to provide all the basic information about yourself, your account details and the amount you want to deposit.

“By the time you have done it correctly, you come to the CBN where the code will be accepted from you as well as the money, process and confirm the genuineness or otherwise of the money to avoid receiving fake notes because there are some fake notes in circulation now.”

He warned that “If anyone wants to try us by bringing in fake notes, he should be ready to be arrested, so don’t go and print old fake naira notes and bring them to the CBN, whatever happens to you, don’t blame us, you caused it.”

He however assured that “We will receive the money from you and do our internal checks before we give you an acknowledgement which is evidence to show that we have collected that amount from you and we go ahead with our internal processes, after finishing with the internal processes, we now hit your account and credit it through your Commercial bank.

“All the Commercial banks are expected to bring all old notes deposited to us and we will collect, that is the final. Some of the Banks have started depositing with us because they want to close their books, as soon as they do that, they will not collect from customers again, that is the reason CBN decided to open this portal for the general public especially the vulnerable who are still having problems of cash used for trading and now that the deadline has expired, they need to deposit their money.

“The CBN is trying to minimize risk involved in losing that money, we are trying to minimize hardship also, we know that people are having some hardship, people are suffering, we not unmindful of that fact, that why the management of the CBN has magnanimously decided to open that portal to assist those who were unable to deposit the money into their bank accounts, that is our process flow in a nutshell.

One shot dead as violent protests over fuel,Naira scarcity rock Abeokuta

Palpable fear has enveloped residents and traders of Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, as irate youths staged violent protests in many parts of the state capital.

The protest reportedly started at Asero, Abeokuta, on Tuesday,  by some customers of GTBank over their inability to get new naira notes from the bank.

The protesters who made bonfires on the roads blocked the road that leads to Adatan and Osiele-Ibadan during the protest.

The development also escalated and spread to Adatan, Sapon, Oke-Ilewo, Lafenwa among others.

Witnesses say the gatherings were largely peaceful until the arrival of police officers who shot a protester dead and caused injuries to several others.

“It was a protest although it did not start as one. When we gathered and the bank said they are not attending to anyone, people stood outside the premises and were complaining,” a witness who pleaded anonymity said.

“As the crowds increased people began to sing songs and the word spread that people are protesting. Before we knew it police came and were shooting sporadically,” the witness further said.

The Access Bank building has now been set on fire by protesting youths in response to the police provocation.

Videos seen also show that the premises of the First Bank branch in the area has been vandalised.

Some banks’ staff at Oke-Ilewo and Panseke were seen rushing out of the premises and left.

The youths later arrived at Oke-Ilewo and destroyed all political materials hanging on the street lights. The youths who moved on motorcycles also blocked the Lalubu road during the protest, halting the free flow of vehicular movements.

They made bonfires in other places while policemen were nowhere to be found until after the angry youths had left the scene.

Also, some protesters stormed a branch of First Bank at  Lafenwa, Abeokuta and destroyed the Automobile Teller Machine in the bank.

Schools were also reportedly closed following the confusion while a secondary school at Gbonagun, Obantoko was reportedly attacked.

A teacher at the school who pleaded anonymity said a tear gas canister was thrown into the school compound.

She said the teachers had to hurriedly evacuate the pupils to a safer place.
