Court sacks Pastor Ghandi as Soun Ogbomoso....Orders fresh selection process

An Oyo State High Court sitting in Ogbomoso, yesterday, upturned the appointment of the new Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye and ordered a fresh selection process to the stool.

Recall that the Oyo State government announced Pastor Olaoye as the new Soun and made him king on September 8, 2023, after the demise of Oba Jimoh Oyewunmi Agunbiade III, who died in December 2021, at 95 after a 48-year reign.

Not satisfied with the process, one of the contestants, Kabir Laoye dragged Ghandi Olaoye to court, saying he was not eligible to be the next Soun.

Olaoye, who challenged Ghandi’s appointment, explained that there was a flaw in the process by which he was appointed.

In his judgment, Justice K.A. Adedokun, who over the matter, ruled that the appointment of Oba Laoye was illegal.

He also ordered the judges to start the right process to elect a new Soun.

Earlier, Justice Adedokun dismissed three petitions brought before him by one Adeyemi Laoye.
The petitioners are also challenging the appointment of the new Soun.

Pharmacists take drug abuse campaign to schools in Ogun

The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Ogun Chapter has disclosed plans to educate secondary school students on the dangers of drug abuse in the state.

In a statement on Monday in Abeokuta, the Chairman of PSN, Adewale Adenugba said it was part of the association’s activities marking the 2023 World Pharmacist Day.

He added that the association would reach out to the Nigeria Correctional Service, and orphanage homes, and also give out medications to some communities lacking basic amenities.

According to him, this year’s celebration with the theme: “Pharmacy, Strengthening Health Systems’’ is apt as practitioners need to recognise their roles in improving global health.

“In recognition of the crucial roles pharmacists play in healthcare administration and promotion, for the 2023 celebration we intend to carry out medical outreaches to key communities in the state.

“The association will carry out basic necessary investigations, health education and donation of medications in those communities.

“We would also be visiting the Nigeria Correctional Service and orphanages within the state to show our empathy and support.

“Some of our secondary schools will also be visited for health talk on drug abuse and addiction and of course engagement with the media for continuous education of the populace,” Adenugba said.

According to him, the purpose of celebrating the day is to acknowledge the efforts of pharmacists while also demanding better working conditions and appropriate recognition for the profession.

Adenugba contended that pharmacists remained the most accessible healthcare professionals in most communities, presenting available and affordable healthcare solutions to the populace and improving health standards across the country.

He, however, urged that, as experts on medicine, pharmacists should be allowed to prescribe and initiate medications.

The chairman stressed the need for Nigeria to move towards this direction as it had been proven in more advanced nations “if we are to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal SDG-3 of the United Nations on Access to Essential Health Services”.

Adenugba said: “In most communities, community pharmacy practice is a life-saving stronghold.

“This sector of the profession strengthens healthcare through providing advice, information and education, triage, screening/testing and referral, administering vaccinations, prescription review, reducing polymerization and medication follow-up to residents.

“However, there is still a wide range of other needs that can be met by community pharmacists in Nigeria, which would relieve pressure on and save time for other areas of the health system.

“Pharmacists also have the skills to take on the management of patients with long-term conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and HIV and many community pharmacists have shown tremendous success in this regard.”

FG denies subsidy return, more fuel stations shut

The Federal Government, on Monday, denied reintroducing the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, amid the closure of many filling stations nationwide due to various challenges in the downstream oil sector.

It also said the pockets of queues observed by motorists in petrol stations across the country stemmed from hiccups in product distribution from the South to the North, not a lack of supply.

This came as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited also declared on Monday that it would have gone bankrupt in June this year had it been the President, Bola Tinubu, did not halt subsidy on PMS in May.

NNPCL also announced that Nigeria would become a net exporter of refined petroleum products by next year, going by efforts to revamp its refineries.

Nigeria, through the  NNPCL, currently imports PMS and other refined petroleum products consumed across the country, which has been ongoing for decades.

The Group Chief Executive Officer, NNPCL, Mele Kyari, told State House Correspondents after an audience with the President at the Aso Rock Villa that fuel subsidy had not been returned.

“No subsidy whatsoever. We are recovering our full cost from the products that we import. We sell to the market, and we understand why the marketers are unable to import. We hope that they do it very quickly and these are some of the interventions the government is doing. There is no subsidy,” he stated.

Kyari’s assertion came barely 48 hours after the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria confirmed the return of fuel subsidy.

Also, oil marketers had repeatedly stated that fuel subsidy had returned, as they explained that the landing cost of petrol as of last week was N720/litre. The commodity is currently sold at between N580/litre and N617/litre, depending on the area of purchase.

PENGASSAN’s National President, Festus Osifo, had said the government still subsidised petrol due to the cost of crude oil in the international market and the exchange rate.

“They [government] are paying subsidy today. In reality, today, there is subsidy because, as of when the earlier price was determined, the price of crude in the international market was around $80 for a barrel.

“But today, it has moved to about $93/94 per barrel for Brent crude. So, because it has moved, the price [of petroleum] also needed to move. The only reason the price will not move is when you can manage your exchange rate effectively and you can pump in supply and bring down the exchange rate.

“So, if the exchange rate comes down today, we will not be paying subsidy. But with the exchange rate value and the price of crude oil in the international market, we have introduced subsidy,” Osifo had explained.

In his inaugural address after taking the oath of office on May 29, 2023, Tinubu announced that the Federal Government was closing the curtains over the subsidy era.

“Subsidy can no longer justify its ever-increasing costs in the wake of drying resources.

“We shall instead re-channel the funds into better investment in public infrastructure, education, health care, and jobs that will materially improve the lives of millions. Petrol subsidy is gone!” Tinubu had declared.

The President’s announcement sparked the increase in fuel price from N197 to between N480 and N570. The pump price was subsequently reviewed upward to N617/litre.

Addressing journalists about the gradual return of fuel queues, on Monday, the NNPCL boss said, “We have seen in a very few states pockets of very low queues not unconnected with the road situation.

“We’re seeing the number of blockades on our road crossing products from the Southern depots into the Northern part of the country and it takes them much longer than they do now.

“They have to reroute the trucks around many locations for them to be able to reach, creating delays and some supply gaps. But that has been filled and we do not see such problems again.”

While arguing that supply remained robust, Kyari explained that the full deregulation of the downstream sector had created market competition.

He said this phenomenon had led to minuscule price variations across gas stations, with consumers naturally patronising marketers with a lesser pump price.

“You must have noticed some fuel stations will reduce prices by two Naira and three Naira, so customers will naturally run to the places where you have that price reduction.

“That creates panic because those who don’t know why they are doing it will think something wrong is happening.

“Supply is robust. We have over 1.4 billion litres of product, both marine and land. Also, there are no issues around delivering those products onto the land. So, there is no fear, nothing to bother about,” Kyari argued.

The NNPC chief revealed that the firm was liaising with other oil marketers to address the forex challenges.

He clarified, “We’re engaging them to resolve alongside other agencies of government and critical issues around access to foreign exchange.

“Government is doing so much to ensure supply of FX into the market. We know this FX market will stabilise the current I&E window at around 770.

Ramon Adedoyin sentenced to death by hanging over Timothy Adegoke's death

Osun State High Court has found the popular hotel owner, Dr Ramon Adedoyin guilty in the murder case of Timothy Adegoke, a former master’s degree student of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, whose death occurred between November 5 and 7, 2021, at  his Hilton Honours Hotel, Ile-Ife.

The Osun Chief Judge, Adepele Ojo, while delivering her judgement on the case, held that the circumstantial evidence available to the court, pointed to the killing of Adegoke while being a guest at the hotel owned by Adedoyin.

According to her, Adedoyin’s decision not to enter the witness box did not help him, as the circumstantial evidence had shifted the burden of proof on him.

Justice Ojo also said Adedoyin’s decision not to enter the witness box meant he agreed to the murder charge pressed against him by the prosecution, dismissing the alibi pleaded on his behalf by his counsel, who said the hotel owner was in Abuja for many days around the time the death of the late Adegoke occurred.

He explained the suspension of the strike was based on this.

The NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero noted that the outcome of the meeting with the government did not yield positive any changes or concessions that would alter their course of action. They stressed that they remained steadfast in their commitment to representing the Nigerian workers’ and people’s interests and desires.

UK bans Nigerian students, others from bringing family by January

The United Kingdom has put in place a law that bar Nigerian and other foreign post graduate students studying in the UK from bringing family as dependents except under specific circumstances. The announcement has been made two days before official statistics are expected to show legal migration has hit a record 700,000 this year.

Last year, 135,788 visas were granted to dependants of foreign students, nearly nine times the 2019 figure.

PM Rishi Sunak told ministers the move would help bring migration down.He told the cabinet that the change, to begin in January 2024, will make a "significant difference to the numbers," according to No 10.Last week, he said ministers were "considering a range of options" to bring migration down, but refused to say what an acceptable level was.

The Conservatives have previously promised to bring net migration below 100,000 a year, but ditched the target ahead of the 2019 election after repeatedly failing to meet it.

Under the announcement, partners and children of postgraduate students other than those studying on courses designated as research programmes will no longer be allowed to apply to live in the UK during the course.

There were 135,788 visas granted to dependants last year, a rise from 54,486 in 2021, and more than seven times the 19,139 granted in 2020.

Under the new rule, the UK will remove the permission for international students to switch out of the student route and into work routes before their studies have been completed to prevent misuse of the visa system.

Sky News also added that “there will also be a review of the maintenance requirement for students and dependents and a crackdown on “unscrupulous” education agents “who make use of inappropriate applications to sell immigration, not education”.

This change takes effect January 2024 to allow students starting courses in the UK time to plan to adapt to the new rules.

This new law comes after indications had emerged that the UK plans to put stricter laws in place to bring down the climbing number of immigrants into the country via studies.

In a written ministerial statement on Tuesday, Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, said recent immigration figures had shown an “unexpected rise” in the number of dependants coming to the UK alongside international students.

Official statistics, which are due to be published this week, are expected to show that net migration has increased from 504,000 in the 12 months to June 2022 to more than 700,000 in the year to December, Sky News said.

According to data, foreign students brought 135,788 family members to Britain last year – nine times more than in 2019 while in 2022, 59,053 Nigerian students brought over 60,923 relatives.

UK to ban Nigerian students, others from bringing family members

T he UK government has set a plan in motion to stop Nigerian students and other international students from bringing their families to the country.

The move became necessary as official figures for net migration climbed a staggering one million, according to a report set to be released this Thursday.

Ministers would crack down on immigration by prohibiting foreign students from transferring their families to the UK in order to stop the number from rising and to stay ahead of the news.

An announcement for the ban is set to be made on Tuesday or Wednesday, according to The Sun UK.

All students enrolling for Master’s degrees and other postgraduate degrees would be impacted by the ban as they would no longer be permitted to bring their families to the UK. Ph.D students deemed to be highly skilled would, however, be exempted from the ban.

Foreign students brought 135,788 relatives to the UK in 2022, nine times as many as in 2019.

More than 59,000 Nigerian students arrived in 2022 with about 61,000 family members.
