President Buhari receives, Bankole, Daniel new APC members in Aso Rock

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday received Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole and former Governor of Ogun State, Gbenga Daniel, who recently defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress APC.
They were accompanied to the Presidential Villa by the Chairman, Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) of the APC, and Governor of Yobe, Mai Mala Buni,  Governors of Jigawa State, Mohammed Badaru and Kebbi, Atiku Bagudu.
They were presented President Buhari following their recent defection to APC.
Daniel was governor of Ogun State from 2003 to 2011 to while Bankole was Speaker of the House of Representatives of Nigeria (2007–2011) on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Bankole dumped his African Democratic Party (ADP) while Daniel left the PDP.
Speaking to correspondents after the meeting, Buni said they came to present the new party members to the president who expressed delight at the caliber of the defectors.
He said: “We came to present new members of our party, Daniel and Bankole. Mr. President is impressed and happy that leaders of such caliber are joining our party at this time we are registering new members, because registering and validating our membership, and indeed this is the right time for them to join us. And that's exactly what Mr. president is very happy. He's pleased is impressed.”
Bankole on his part said  he join the ruling party to give support to the effort the president was making, adding, “there are issues we need to solve and any reasonable human beings should support at this moment. From Borno to Lagos, Bayelsa to Sokoto. These are critical times and we shouldn't be found wanting.
“This is the time to step up and support so that these decisions can be taken, executed and owned by us as a nation. Because 10 years from now, 20 years from now, people ask who stood up when these things were happening? It's every citizens, right and all we've done is exercise it today.  But actions from now will speak for us.
On his part, the former governor and former Director-General Atiku Campaign Organization, while explaining why he joined the ruling party, stressed the need to deemphasize party in the affairs of the country, saying, “Why APC? There are too many options in the party. One thing is sure that we are going through health and economic challenges, we must do less of political contestations and give support.”
Daniel added: “One thing that is for sure, is that the entire world is going through challenges that are global challenges, economic challenges, health challenges. And when you are in a situation like this, as I usually opined, we should do less of partisan contestation, all of us must come together to support whoever is in power.
“And what we have decided to do is to come and give our support to the president so that jointly, we can continuously navigate the country that is what is relevant.”
Commenting on  suggestions that the APC was trying to create a one party state by fishing for members of other political parties, Daniel pointed out that the PDP was once in the  same position in the country as the then ruling party.
He said: “Definitely any political environment, whether it is multi party or two party, there will usually be a majority party and the minority party. So I don't think that there's anything new that has happened. A few years ago, when PDP was at the helm of affairs at the centre, I think the last count out of the 36 states, PDP was in charge in more than 24 states at that time. And the country did not become a one party state. So I think what is going on is quite healthy. The contestation is quite exciting. I think what's important is that parties should look inwards and organise themselves very well, so that at any point in time, the people have an opportunity to make an informed choice. And that I think is what is going on.”

Gunmen Kidnap Two Female OOU Students,Demand N50m ransom

Two female students of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ayetoro campus in Yewa-North Local Government Area of Ogun State were, on Sunday night reportedly kidnapped.
The victims, identified as Adeyemo Precious and Oyefule Abiola, are students at the departments of Forestry and Wildlife Management and Agricultural Economics respectively.
They were reported to have been abducted in front of their hostel on Sunday night at Olowu area of Ayetoro.
A source who pleaded anonymity told our correspondent that the abductors have reached out to the families and demanded a sum of N50m for the release of the students.
The source, however, said the abductors linked up with the relatives of the victims through their (students’) phones.
When asked whether the abductors were Fulani herdsmen or not , the source said it was the kidnapped students that spoke with their families and not the abductors
The kidnappers have not spoken with the families. It was the students that spoke and echoed the demands. We don’t know whether they are Yoruba or Fulani because the families have not heard directly from the abductors.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said he was in a meeting and promised to get back to our correspondent after the meeting.
As of the time of filing this report, Oyeyemi had not got in touch with our correspondent.
Meanwhile , the Yewa North Patriotic Forum has called on Governor Dapo Abiodun to direct the Commissioner of Police to relocate to Yewa-North over the issue of insecurity.
Th group said that Yewa local government had been battling with herders and farmers’ crisis that had reportedly claimed many lives in the last few months.
President of the group, Sanni Omobolaji, in a statement issued on Monday over the kidnapping noted that Ayetoro area has not been enjoying proper policing.
The statement reads in part, “We have not been enjoying good policing in Ayetoro since the former DPO died a few months back. Since then, a new DPO has not been deployed to the area, while the DCO who has been acting in the capacity of DPO has not been cooperative with our people.
“We, however, demand an immediate redeployment of the DCO, else, we might take that as an act of sabotage by the police.”
Also, the state chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Mr. Adeyemi Samson, begged Governor Abiodun to ensure security of students in Ogun West.
“Our governor must embark on a fact finding mission now, so as to see things for himself because the security situation in Ogun West is terrible.
“We also beg the commissioner of police to move to Ogun West to restore normalcy in the area.”
Samson also said that if the area is searched effectively, the culprits might still be apprehended and the students released safely.

PPPRA deletes new petrol price post as NNPC insists no hike

Nigeria’s fuel regulators appeared to have walked back on the governments sudden decision to increase petrol price Thursday, with the PPPRA deleting a post announcing the huge increment while the NNPC repeated its earlier claim there would be no increase in March.

The decision came after Nigerians furiously reacted to the new rates that put the pump price of petrol at between N209 and 212 a litre, a significant jump from about N162.

The increase put the lie to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation’s earlier assurance  that the government would not change prices despite a global crude oil price rebound.

As Nigerians woke Friday to the news, harshly criticising the government, the NNPC tweeted its position remained, a clear contradiction to the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency’s announcement.

Later, it became clear the PPPRA’s “guiding price” online post had been removed. The agency updated its website instead with details of the availability of fuel stock in the country as of Friday.

It was not immediately clear whether the decision to delete the post signalled a reversal of the price hike by the government.

The announcement of a new price came amid a partial scarcity of fuel that has lingered for weeks, with filling stations clogged by cars queuing to buy petrol.

Wanted Cultist and Serial Killer Suleiman Ganiyu arrested in Ijebu

Men of the Ogun State police command have arrested Suleiman Ganiyu, pictured above, an alleged serial killer and member of Eiye cult group who had been on the wanted list of the Command for a while.

Abimbola Oyeyemi, the spokesperson of the state police command said the suspect was arrested following a distress call from Itamerin Comprehensive High School Ago-Iwoye on March 14, that the suspect came to the school premises and started shooting sporadically simply because his younger brother who is a student of the school was beaten.
''Upon the distress call, the DPO Ago-Iwoye, CSP Paul Omiwole led his patrol team to the school but before their arrival, the suspect had ran away. He was subsequently traced to his hideout at Imosan Street Oru-Ijebu where he was eventually apprehended.
On interrogation, he confessed being a leading member of Eiye confraternity. He confessed further that he was the one who killed one Awokale Olusegun a.k.a Lala on the 27th of February 2020 over a supremacy battle following which he was declared wanted by the police.
He also confessed being responsible for the death of one “Babasco” and one Dapo at Ijebu-Igbo in 2015 during a clash between his group and Aye cult group. Further investigation revealed that the suspect was the brain behind a series of violent cult related clashes in Ago-Iwoye, Awa-Ijebu, Oru-Ijebu, Ilaponu and Ijebu-Igbo in the recent past.'' the statement read
Oyeyemu added that the state Commissioner of Police, CP Edward Awolowo Ajogun, has ordered the immediate transfer of suspect to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for discreet investigation and subsequent prosecution.

Police Detains Oyo Farmers Whose Farms Were Destroyed By Wakili, Collects N50,000 For Bail – Youth Leader

A youth leader in Ayete/Kajola community in the Ibarapa North Local Government Area of Oyo State, Ganiyu Omirinde, has narrated the ordeals of their farmers in the hands of criminal Fulani herdsmen allegedly unleashed by a suspected Fulani kidnap kingpin, Isikilu Wakili.

In an interview with PUNCH, Omirinde stated that farmers whose farms were destroyed by 75-year-old Wakili’s hoodlums were arrested and detained by the police and they were forced to part with N50,000 as bail before securing their release.

Omirinde added that he was part of the Oodua Peoples Congress team that went to Wakili’s den, noting that the herdsmen fired gunshots at them.

He said, “The herdsmen have constituted a nuisance to us. They vandalise our farms; they attack and inflict pains our men and rape our women. They beat many with sticks, clubbed many others, while they cut many more with machetes. They destroy property and vandalise farms, and at the end of it all, security agents will release the herders to go free without paying any compensation and without prosecution. They incapacitated us and turned us away from the farm.

“For us to eat, we go to cafeterias because we don’t have foodstuffs any longer. Ayete was a food basket before. Today in Ayete, you cannot eat N200 worth of amala and get satisfied because it is so expensive. All this is because we have been barred from our farms. We have to drink more water when eating. As we speak, a mini-truckload of cassava tubers is now N300,000, whereas it was N270,000. The problem is that it is very hard to come by.

“We are appealing to Governor Seyi Makinde to let the Fulani move to their base out of our community. They have their own towns and villages; let them go back so that we can have our peace back. We are being pushed too far. When we get to the elastic limit, we will resist the assault. It is the government that we are afraid of and not the Fulani. If we had our way, Fulani herders would have no place in our community anymore. As they terrorise us if we give them an equal reaction, will they be able to graze their cattle?

“Wakili would say land belongs to God and not to any man. Then, we asked him that while land belongs to God, is Wakili and his cohorts God’s lieutenant to claim the land being inhabited by other people? We are the people whom God put in charge of the land in this part of the world and we are answerable to God only regarding the land that we inhabit, not the herders.

“We don’t want him back on our land. When released, he should look for somewhere else to settle down; we can no longer welcome Wakili in Ayete/Kajola communities. His cattle now roam about, plundering our farmlands. We don’t have anyone to fight our cause or give us justice. The court has failed us.

“There is a police station but it is the complainant who takes the blame and gets locked up here in cases between the natives and the herders. The police take bribes to upturn cases. After locking a complainant up, they will then take N50,000 as bail. That is why we no longer lodge complaints at the station.”

Omirinde noted that since Wakili was arrested, they had had “relative peace but his cronies are still on the farm plundering our crops.”

“You heard when some people called us on the telephone some minutes ago to say that herders had set some farms on fire. The situation at Baba Pupa to Oke-Arinsa and Dagbere, Afuje to Kajola is tense as we speak. Those are no-go areas. Now, the government doesn’t want the situation to escalate,” he added.
